Proper Brushing and Flossing

Brushing your teeth and flossing are important parts of your dental care routine. You may be surprised to learn that the most effective technique of brushing takes at least 2 minutes and that your toothbrush should be replaced every two months. Maintaining a good home care routine is one of the best things you can do for your oral health and your overall health. It is also important to schedule regular dental checkups and professional cleanings.

Brushing

To get the most out of brushing your teeth, you need to do it correctly and at least twice a day, morning and evening. Start with a toothbrush that has soft, rounded bristles and is easy to hold. Place your toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and use just enough pressure to feel the bristles against your gums and between your teeth.

Using short, circular strokes and a scrubbing motion, brush all inner and outer tooth surfaces several times. Brush along the gum line and move your brush frequently to reach every tooth and make sure you brush for at least two minutes. Oral bacteria can remain in taste buds, so remember to brush your tongue.

Flossing

After thorough brushing, it is time to floss. Pull 18 to 24 inches of dental floss from the floss dispenser and wrap the ends of the floss around your index and middle fingers. Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion, and be careful not to snap the floss into the gums. Hold the floss tightly around each tooth in a C shape and move the floss back and forth and up and down against the side of each tooth.

In Between Dental Visits

In between regular visits to the dentist, there are simple steps that each of us can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems. Of course, thoroughly brushing and flossing twice a day is top of the list. Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals, and using dental products that contain fluoride, are a few more things you can do as part of your oral health routine.
